چکیده

Efforts to internalize data sharing in research practice have been driven largely by developing international norms that have not incorporated opinions from researchers in lowand middle-income countries. We sought to identify the issues around ethical data sharing in the context of research involving women and children in urban India. We interviewed researchers, managers, and research participants associated with a Mumbai non-governmental organization, as well as researchers from other organizations and members of ethics committees. We conducted 22 individual semi-structured interviews and involved 44 research participants in focus group discussions. We used framework analysis to examine ideas about data and data sharing in general; its potential benefits or harms, barriers, obligations, and governance; and the requirements for consent. Both researchers and participants were generally in favor of data sharing, although limited experience amplified their reservations. We identified three themes: concerns that the work of data producers may not receive appropriate acknowledgment, skepticism about the process of sharing, and the fact that the terrain of data sharing was essentially uncharted and confusing. To increase data sharing in India, we need to provide guidelines, protocols, and examples of good practice in terms of consent, data preparation, screening of applications, and what individuals and organizations can expect in terms of validation, acknowledgment, and authorship.

The Evolution of Distance Education: Implications for Instructional Design on the Potential of the Web

Although the training and development and higher education environments lead K-12 schools in embracing distance learning technologies there is modest growth in distance education efforts in the K-12 environment, and the steady rate at which distance learners are enrolling emphasizes the importance of this population (Saba, 2005). In many ways, this uncharted territory offers some of the most ex...

High energy neutrino telescopes are multipurpose instruments; their science mission covers astronomy and astrophysics, cosmology, particle physics and cosmic ray physics. Their deployment creates new opportunities for glaciology and oceanography, possibly geology[1]. The observations of astronomers span 19 decades in energy or wavelength, from radio-waves to the high energy gamma rays detected ...

Seizing the White Space: an interview with Mark W. Johnson

What makes opportunities like these so difficult to grasp is that, so often, they require companies to move far beyond their core into uncharted territory – into their white space. That’s a scary place, one where many companies’ experience is (as one CEO put it) “unblemished by success.” But if the danger is all too obvious, its causes are not. The white space is hard to navigate not because it...

Handling Failures in Cyber-Physical Systems: Potential Directions

The strong coupling of software and physical processes in the emerging field of cyber-physical systems (CPS) motivates the development of new methods to respond to failures in both the cyber and physical domains. To this end, we propose a study of existing work on handling failures from various disciplines. If these models and methods are applicable to CPS, appropriate extensions should be made...
